Foot work is one of the first exercises taught in Pilates equipment sessions to warm up the body for the workout to come. The foot work series gives the teacher information regarding the clients, strength, alignment and movement patters. It also strengthens the muscles of the legs including the internal and external rotators, inner and outer thighs, the hamstrings and quadriceps, the calf muscles and the stabilizers of the ankle. It also teaches lumbo pelvic stability. Each footwork position has its benefits. For example, heels on parallel, uses fully the ankle, knee and the hip joints.
